Courses 2007-2008

Beginning Writers I - Level A: Ages 10 – 12.
Prerequisites: Students must have a basic understanding of a sentence structure and parts of speech. Based on The Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum, students will become skilled users of basic structure and style techniques through a variety of writing assignments. From basic note taking to research, this course will develop proficiency in expository and creative writing. By the end of the year, students will have written essays, reports, and fictional stories. This course covers all nine units of Teaching Writing: Structure & Style culminating with a self-published project. Offered at Excellence in Education (EIE) Monrovia, Thursday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 and Tuesday mornings at Valley Vineyard Christian Fellowship (VVCF), from 9:00-10:30 Reseda, CA.

Beginning Writers II - Levels B/C: Ages 11 & Up.
Prerequisites: Students should have one year of level A or experience using the IEW curriculum. All level B students will learn and practice a variety of paragraph structures including cause and effect, comparison and contrast, opinion and reason, and more. Offered at EIE, Monrovia, CA. Thursday Mornings 9:00-10:30 AM and Valley Vineyard Christian Fellowship Tuesday Mornings from 10: 45 - 12:15

Intermediate Writers I - Level A: Ages 13 & Up.
Prerequisites: Students must have a basic understanding of a sentence and the ability to punctuate. This is the exact same class as Beginning Writers 1 except content material is appropriate for this age group. Special assignments include PowerPoint presentations and self-publishing project. Offered at EIE, Monrovia, CA Thursday afternoons from 3:00-4:30.

Intermediate /Advanced Writers II -: Ages 13 & up.
Prerequisites: Middle school or high school students with an understanding of IEW curriculum. This class covers intensive critical thinking skills through research and report writing. Students will focus on developing and supporting a strong thesis statement, documenting and evaluating sources, PowerPoint presentations and preparing for the college level composition. Offered at EIE, Monrovia, CA. Thursday mornings from 10:45-12:15 and VVCF (Reseda) Tuesday Afternoons from 1:00-2:30
